How Children Learn? January 20, 2012

Filed under: Parenting Articles — cupertinolittlepeople @ 5:51 PM

I just ordered 2 books from Amazon.  One of the books is written by Bruce D. Perry, M.D., Ph.D, an internationally recognized authority on brain development & children in crisis.  Can’t wait to read them because I’m interested to learn how children think and learn.  In the article, “The Developmental Hotzone”, by Dr. Bruce Perry, he said, “In order for a child, or any of us, to learn, mature, or master a new skill, something has to change.  That something is the brain. ……If the brain does not change, we will not learn.  By understanding how a child’s brain changes, therefore, we can understand how a child learns.”  The article also explain how our brain is dependent upon experience that contains sight, sound, touch, taste and smell.  It’s important to provide the right opportunities at the right time and in the proper sequence for optimal teaching. Many of the parents that I came across are worried that their child doesn’t know the numbers, letter or how to read.  From my experience, children will know their numbers and their letters accidentally; given that children learn in a safe and loving environment like Little People!  Children need to feel safe before they enter into their developmental hot zone and their curiosity will help them to learn.  Often we push them too fast out of their comfort zone.  I love the way Dr. Bruce Perry illustrated, ” If it is unreasonable to expect the 4-year-old to learn calculus or to drive a car.  He will fail if asked to do these things……It is as much a mismatch to ask the 4-year-old with poor fine-motor control to write his name “neatly” as it is to ask him to drive a car.”  This reminds us that it’s important for teachers and parents not to push our children too far beyond their comfort zone.  This would lead to sense of failure on the child.  Furthermore, Dr. Perry mentioned that learning requires focus, sustained attention and the capacity to tolerate frustration.  If a child learns too much and too soon, the child will become too overwhelming and discouraged.

The books that I ordered are: The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind, Survive Everyday Parenting Struggles, and Help Your Family Thrive by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson.  And, The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog: And Other Stories from a Child Psychiatrist’s Notebook–What Traumatized Children Can Teach Us About Loss, Love, and Healing, by Bruce Perry and Maia Szalavitz.

If you are a teacher, caregiver, or parent, you might be interest to read some of Dr. Bruce Perry’s article.  Here’s a link with many articles written by Dr. Bruce Perry on Scholastic.com.

Swine Flu Alert April 27, 2009

We are taking extra precaution to ensure that the Swine flu (H1N1) does not spread to our classrooms.  Therefore, we would like to ask parents to remind your kids to wash hands with soap and water before, during and after school.  We encourage your child to stay home if he/she is sick.  Here are some symptoms that you should watch for:  fever, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, body aches, headaches, lack of appetite.  Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu.  The symptoms are similar to a regular flu.  However, extra precautions should be taken, since H1N1 virus is highly contagious and there is NO vaccine available to prevent the virus.

Trick – or -Treat for UNICEF

Dear Parents,

Let’s make this year’s Halloween Count!  Little People will participate in “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF”.  Your child will learn that he or she can make a difference in the world by volunteering to help.  Your child will receive a UNICEF box from Little People SOON!

Here’s how you can help make Halloween count in 2009:

  1. Talk to your child about things that he or she probably takes for granted:
  • Easy access to food and clean water.
  • The ability to go to school and get an education.
  • Availability of medical help when it is needed.

   2.  Tell your child about the lives of kids who live in other parts of the  world:

  • In many parts of the world, kids drink unsafe water from a river or stream that often makes them very sick.
  • Many kids have never seen a doctor or had the immunizations they need to protect against deadly diseases.
  • Some kids don’t learn to read or write, because they do not have access to school or must work to support their families.

3. Learn how UNICEF helps kids around the world:

  • UNICEF  builds wells so kids can have access to clean water.
  • UNICEF provides 40% of the children in developing countries with their immunizations.
  • UNICEF helps build schools, train teachers and provide school supplies to kids around the world.

To find out more about Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF and how easy it is to participate, go to unicefsua.org/trickortreat.

Sincerely,

Little People

Last Thursday, January 21st, we get to see the Hawaiian Luau Dance Performance with grandpas and grandmas from Live Oaks Adult Day Center.  The Luau Dancers were local seniors!  It was a great opportunity to connect the little ones with the seniors.

Live Oaks http://www.liveoakadultdaycare.org/ is within walking distance from Little People and we don’t have to cross the street to get there! A few times a year, Live Oaks invite us for Valentines Celebration, Easter Egg Hunt, Trick or Treat/ Pumpkin Parables activities, Christmas celebration, etc. We feel that it is so important to demonstrate the act of love, respect, and kindness toward others. Even though not all the kids like to visit older people, but by connecting the children with the seniors, we’re able to demonstrate that the elders are worthy of our time.

Over the course of July, the children at Little People learned about insects.  They get to see our painted lady butterflies coming out from the chrysalis.  They get to feed the lady bugs and let them fly away.  The ant farm was so much fun to watch.  Children were fascinated when they saw the ants building the tunnels.  Watching the hornworms grew was an amazing experience.  Now, we are waiting for the moth to come out.  Last but not least, children from Little People learned the 3 body parts of the insects.  They’re the head, thorax, and abdomen!  They also came with 2 antennas and 6 legs!

Butterfly release!

Ashley, from Insect Discovery Lab, San Francisco.

Millipede curls up when it’s in danger.  It’s not an insect because it has more than 6 legs!
